All About LED Downlights

What does LED mean? LED is shirt for light Emitting diode. A diode is an electrical component with two terminals which conduct the electricity only in one direction. With an electrical current, the diode emits a bright light around the small bulb. So although LEDs do appear to be bulbs they are, in fact are not.

Are they more Efficient? LEDs are a far much more energy efficient light. LEDs do not use a filament where a conductor is heated and light is created, they produce very little amounts of heat and do not use filaments making them far more efficient in consumption and output.

What is the Lifespan of an LED downlight? LED downlights have an average lifespan of 50,000 hours  (the lifespan of a halogen lamp may be between 1500 to 3000 hours).  However to achieve this long life the LED light needs to have quality electronic components that also have the same longevity, have sufficient thermal control / heat management and also be powered correctly. Without these key ingredients being incorporated, your LED light won’t last, so considering the current cost of LED lighting it is even more important to purchase LED lights from quality manufacturers.

Can I replace my halogen downlights with LED? There is also the possibility of retrofitting LED downlights to replace halogen. Because electricity costs are ever increasing, now is the best time to remove and replace halogen downlights with long-life, high efficiency LED retrofit downlights.

What colour are they? LEDs are available in a wide range of colours. In a home or office  a shade of white light will usually be required.  To ensure you achieve the shade of light you need, specify the ‘colour temperature’ required.Colour temperatures below 5000 Kelvin (K) are called warm colours (halogen and incandescent lights are ‘warm white’) and those over 5000 K are called cool colours (fluorescent tubes and normal daylight are ‘cool white’).
